A Short Hike: Kabeyun Trail, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, ON

This post is part of our record of fun things to do along the way. We are hoping that the information in these short posts, will help you in planning awesome adventures of your own… and help us in remembering and recording some of the things we’ve done while on the road

A secluded Lake Superior Shoreline along the Kabeyun Trail

The Kabeyun is a multi-day trail along the peninsula of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. It is 37 kilometers long and, taken as a whole, is a challenging and rugged trail. When we were in this area (July 2022) we chose to hike part of this trail as an out and back day hike. It was a lovely 8 or so mile hike, strenuous but still doable for this middle-aged couple.

There were few people along this trail; we saw just two other couples along our route. And the trail had amazing views, secluded beaches, deep forests, and rocky climbs. It was a fabulous day hike with just the right amount of challenge for us.

Getting to the Trailhead

The viewpoint at the North Kabeyun Trailhead

The North Kabeyun Trailhead, is reached via a rugged dirt and gravel road. In spots, the road was washed out and rocky. A low clearance vehicle could make it to the end of the road, but it would take some patience and care. Along the way, there is access to several other day hikes and a lakeside picnic area.

There is a provincial park day use fee to use this trail. A very large campground, with many amenities, is available in the park.

The Trail

After parking at the trailhead, check out the amazing Lake Superior Viewpoint (Pictured left). It gave me (Perri) jelly legs!

The trail begins across the road from the viewpoint and travels sharply DOWN toward the lake. It is rocky and requires some scrambling.

Eventually, the ground evens out, and the trail meanders through deep woods, with few views of the lake. We encountered some biting flies and mosquitos here in July, but not many. I imagine there would be more earlier in the season.

The way back to the trailhead is steep

The trail eventually emerges on a wonderful rocky shore with views all the way to Thunder Bay, ON. lt moves inland again after this, always beside the lake, though it is not often in sight of it.

Those up for more adventure, can reserve backcountry sites and make a multi-day backpacking trip of it. Eventually, the trail reaches the “head” of the sleeping giant at the tip of the peninsula.

One thing for day hikers to keep in mind: The way back will be steep and somewhat arduous. Give yourself time and rest as you climb back up to the viewpoint and head on to other adventures.

The Kabeyun is a beautiful and rugged trail, far from the crowd. Someday, we hope to return and hike the whole trail.
